Criterion (I) The Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn region is the largest glacial area in the Alps and includes the Aletsch Glacier, the largest and longest ice stream in western Eurasia. It is thus of major scientific interest in the context of glacial history and ongoing processes, particularly in relation to climate change.
Criterion (II) The Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn region contains a wide range of Alpine and sub-Alpine habitats. It provides superb examples of ecological succession, for example the characteristic upper and lower treeline of the Aletsch forest.
The global phenomenon of climate change is particularly well illustrated in this region, reflected in the varying rates of glacier retreat. This in turn creates new substrates for ongoing ecological succession
Criterion (III) The impressive landscape of the Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn region has always played an important role in European literature, art, mountaineering and Alpine tourism. The area’s aesthetic beauty has long attracted an international clientele and is acclaimed as one of the most spectacular mountain regions in the world.
