Description:
The Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn region is the most glaciated area in the Alps, containing the Aletsch Glacier - Europe’s longest ice stream - and a remarkable range of classic glacial features such as U-shaped valleys, glacial basins, horn peaks and moraines. The area provides an outstanding geological record of the immense uplift and compression which formed the Alps many millions of years ago. The diversity of flora and fauna is illustrated in the many forms of life found in the Alpine and sub-Alpine regions. Plant colonization following the retreat of the glaciers provides an excellent example of plant succession. The impressive views of the north walls of high-Alpine peaks, centred on the magnificent Eiger Mönch & Jungfrau, have played an important role in European culture.
