Suspension of Schynige Platte Railway operations

Operations of the Schynige Platte Railway had to be suspended today, 27 May 2012, when a train became blocked.

Melting snow set a tree trunk in motion and this slipped several metres down into a wall of snow lying alongside the track. The snow was pushed against an ascending train, which was then blocked but not derailed. The incident happed at 11.30 h, between Breitlauenen station and the Schynige Platte summit station. The train was carrying 85 passengers. No one was hurt and everyone was later transported back to Wilderswil by train. The Schynige Platte Mountain Guesthouse catered for 150 persons until they could return to the valley at 15.30 h. The incident caused material damage of around 1000 francs. The Schynige Platte Railway will run to schedule from Whit Monday.
