Planning permission granted for V-Cableway project

After more than five years of planning, the V-Cableway is about to be built. The Swiss Federal Office of Transport (BAV) issued planning permission for the entire project yesterday, Thursday, 31 May 2018. This will ensure the timely launch of the Grindelwald-Männlichen gondola cableway in December 2019. The tricable gondola Eigerexpress will be opened at the end of 2020.

Together with the Grindelwald-Männlichen Gondola Cableway (GGM), Jungfrau Railways is implementing the V-Cableway project with its eight integrated components for the long-term safeguarding of the future of tourism in the entire Jungfrau Region. After more than five years of planning, the cableways and the public transport connection to the Bernese Oberland Railway (BOB) are about to be built. The Swiss Federal Office of Transport (BAV) issued planning permission for the V-Cableway yesterday, Thursday, 31 May 2018.

Ground-breaking ceremony and start of construction

Legal recourse to the Federal Administrative Court is open to appeal against the decision of the BAV. In its press release of today, 1 June 2018, the BAV comments as follows: “The environmental organisations have promised to waive a complaint against the planning permission of BAV under the conditions drawn up by them. BAV has laid down these conditions as requirements in the decree.”

The official ground-breaking ceremony will take place once the environmental NGOs have waived their appeal. The work at Grindelwald Grund and the Eiger Glacier will then begin immediately. The highest priority is the construction of the new Grindelwald-Männlichen gondola cableway. The lift will be in operation unchanged up to and including winter season 2018/2019. During the summer of 2019, it will be closed in order to start the winter season 2019/2020 on time in December 2019 with the new 10-passenger gondola cableway from the Grund terminus. Also in December 2019, the direct connection to the public transport system takes place with the opening of the new Rothenegg BOB station. The Wengeralp Railway from Grindelwald to Kleine Scheidegg will operate throughout the construction period according to the timetable. The Eigerexpress will open in December 2020 together with all the parts of the terminus and the parking garage.

Information on the project and its construction progress will be available from July 2018 in the info room in Grindelwald Grund as well as on the website at: www.jungfrau.ch/v-bahn
