Hanspeter Rüfenacht completed a commercial apprenticeship with vocational college (1977) and graduated with a degree in business administraton (HWV) in 1984. He worked for 25 years in various management positions at Schweizerische Bankgesellschaft and UBS in private and corporate client business and credit management (1974–1999). In 1999, he moved to Berner Kantonalbank AG, where he was initially Head of Credit Management, became a member of the Executive Board in 2002 and was Chair of the Executive Board from 2012 to 2019.
