Heinz Karrer completed a commercial apprenticeship at Schweizerische Bankgesellschaft in 1978 and obtained his Swiss university entrance qualification (Matura) via the second-chance education route in 1983. He started his career as Managing Director of the Sporting Goods Suppliers Association (1985 1987) and then held management positions at Intersport, most recently as Chair of the Executive Board of Intersport Holding AG (1990–1995). He then took over the management of Ringier Switzerland and was a member of the Group Executive Board of Ringier AG (1995–1997). From 1997 to 2002, he was responsible for the Marketing and Sales division at Swisscom as a member of the Group Executive Board. He subsequently led Axpo Holding AG as CEO from 2002 to 2014. Other professional positions included Chair of the Board of Directors of Kuoni Group (2014–2016) and Chair of economiesuisse (2013–2020). Today he is self-employed and manages KAFAM GmbH with mandates on boards of directors and foundation boards.
