More than a million guests visit the Jungfraujoch

For the second time in its history, Jungfrau Railways has attracted over a million visitors to the Top of Europe. At the same time, new highs were achieved in the summer season for all adventure mountains.

The Jungfrau Railway Group can look back on a successful year in terms of visitor numbers. Excursion traffic to Jungfraujoch - Top of Europe in the reporting year profited from the renewed increase in demand from Asia. 1,041,500 people visited the Jungfraujoch in 2017, an increase of 13.6 per cent on the previous year. This beat the previous record year of 2015 by 3.4 per cent, thanks in particular to a strong first six months. After a slower previous year, it was important for the company to further intensify its active involvement in Asian markets, to improve customer satisfaction through quality measures and to further strengthen the Jungfraujoch - Top of Europe brand.

Thanks to the early snowfall and cold temperatures, Jungfrau Railways was able to start the winter sports season as early as mid-November 2017 and offer continuous winter sports operation in Grindelwald and Wengen from an early stage. The halfpipe in world cup format and the two Snow Parks in the Grindelwald-First Freestyle area were opened before the festive period. The Jungfrau Ski Region is a cooperation in which the Jungfraubahn Group holds more than 60%. From the start of the season until 2 January 2018, the Jungfrau Ski Region registered 180,000 skier visits and recorded an increase of 60% on the same period during the previous year. The figure of 13% is thus still well behind the best winter sports season so far of 2007/2008.

In the experience mountains segment, the other railways in the group all achieved a record result. First Railway achieved an increase of 17.8 per cent on the previous year. From April to October 2017, it achieved a growth in guest numbers of 14.6% on 2016, making it the best summer result in its history. The extended adventure offer partly contributed to the increase in visitor numbers. With an increase of 30 per cent, the positive trend continues at Harder Railway. The newly opened pavilion offers a higher capacity in the restaurant and increases the attractiveness of the destination, which first opened in November. Mürren Railway carried 655,000 passengers and, thanks to successful cross-marketing with the Jungfraujoch, was able to exceed its good result of the previous year by 6.7 per cent.
