Ahead of the New England Patriots’ appearance in Munich in November, an extraordinary sporting event took place at Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe on 23 September 2026. At 3,454 metres above sea level, Sebastian Vollmer, a former German American football player for the Patriots, competed against skiing legend Carlo Janka and Swiss freestyle trampoline world champion Robin Steiner in a «Snow Bowl». With plenty of competitive spirit and enthusiasm, the three took on challenges including the Fastest Touchdown Run, Touchdown Tubing and Snow Angel Defense. The event was hosted by Gian Simmen, the 1998 Olympic halfpipe champion.
The New England Patriots are known for legendary games played in winter conditions. But no Patriots player had ever competed for glory at 3,454 metres above sea level. For former Olympic champion, world champion and overall World Cup winner Carlo Janka, and Swiss freestyle trampoline world champion Robin Steiner, the snowy, icy glacier setting felt more like home turf. At the end, all three received a Snow Bowl Award: a ring inspired by the Super Bowl.
World record: The highest field goal in the world
Another remarkable sporting moment took place at Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe on Tuesday, 22 September 2026. At 3,454 metres above sea level, New England Patriots kicking legend Adam Vinatieri made the world’s highest field goal, recognised by GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS. The feat brought together the extreme altitude, the spectacular setting and the Patriots’ special connection to snow, wind and decisive field goals.
Snow and spectacular field goals are part of the New England Patriots’ history. During the legendary 1982 «Snow Plow Game», a patch of the field was cleared amid a snowstorm so that kicker John Smith could make a decisive 33-yard field goal. Even more famous is the 2002 playoff game against the Raiders, when Adam Vinatieri first kicked a 45-yard field goal to tie the game in heavy snow, then kicked the game winner. It remains one of the most significant moments in the team’s history.
More world-famous stars at Jungfraujoch
These are just two of the many events featuring internationally known stars that have taken place at Jungfraujoch. The first, in 2007, brought players from the Swiss national football team to the mountain for the kick-off to Euro 2008. Around 20 more events followed, featuring guests such as NBA star Tony Parker, the Klitschko brothers, tennis star Roger Federer, footballers from Switzerland and across Europe for the kick-off to UEFA Women’s Euro 2025, and Chinese star pianist Lang Lang.
