How a Japanese letterbox came to the Jungfraujoch

Anyone who has seen the high alpine wonderland on the Jungfraujoch and walked the adventure trail would want to share this experience with friends. A popular medium for this is the picture postcard. That’s why there’s a red letterbox right next to the entrance to Europe’s highest railway station. That’s right, a red Japanese letterbox. The reason: the highest post offices of Japan and Switzerland – on the Jungfraujoch and Mount Fuji – signed a partnership agreement in July 1993. As a sign of their new friendship, the two post offices each received a letterbox from their counterpart: a yellow one from Switzerland and a tall red one from Japan. Something else in common: Both the Jungfraujoch and Mount Fuji are located in a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Did you know that…
Every day, several hundred postcards are sent from the Jungfraujoch post office to Asia, and even more to addresses in Europe. Why don’t you write the next card? Postcards are available next door in the kiosk.
