Aerial cableway Lauterbrunnen – Grütschalp is being renovated

The Lauterbrunnen – Grütschalp aerial cableway is part of the Lauterbrunnen-Mürren mountain cable- and railway and is undergoing a complete renovation this spring. On Thursday, May 21, the new cabin for the cableway arrived in Lauterbrunnen. The renovation provides also an optimization in energy consumption and passenger guidance.

The new cabin is slightly bigger and longer than the previous one and can now accommodate 135 passengers. This brings its capacity better in line with that of the Grütschalp – Mürren adhesion railway, which was renovated earlier. The cabin’s colouring has also been matched to the adhesion railway’s new multiple-unit trains. The commissioning of the new aerial cableway will take place on Saturday, July 11. It will operate unaccompanied.

In addition to the cabin, the cable car’s suspension system and running gear will also be replaced during the renovation. Other works include replacing the drive control system, the safety brake hydraulics, and the brake hydraulic units, as well as overhauling the drive motors, the brake systems and gearboxes.

To improve passenger guidance, an additional platform is being installed at the valley station to enhance safety. This ensures that the routes for departing and arriving guests are clearly separated. There are also two new escalators and a new lift. In addition, new, tall platform doors are being installed.

Optimise energy consumption

The adhesion railway and the aerial cableway recover electricity during the descent. Thanks to the installation of a new energy storage system at the mountain station, the energy generated during the descent is now stored on site. Previously, this was fed back into the electricity grid. In future, the energy can be reused directly during the cableway’s ascent. This will significantly reduce the costs of grid usage and, in particular, the charges for peak power consumption.
