Jungfrau Railway Group

The Jungfrau Railway Group is a leading tourism company and the largest mountain railway company in Switzerland. It offers its customers an adventure in the mountains and on the train. The main offer is the journey to the Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe. Due to the long-term development of a distribution and agency network, it has achieved a leading position in the Asian markets. The Jungfrau Railway Group also operates its own hydroelectric plant and sells complete holiday packages on its website in cooperation with partner companies. It also leases space for restaurants or sometimes operates establishments itself.

Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe

The Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe is the most profitable segment of the Group. The core of this segment is the highest railway station in Europe at 3,454 metres above sea level, situated within the UNESCO World Heritage Site SWISS ALPS Jungfrau-Aletsch. The trip with the Eiger Express tricable gondola or the Wengernalp Railway and the Jungfrau Railway to the Jungfraujoch is also the strategic "heart" of the company. 1,056,600 visitors travelled to the Top of Europe in 2025. This means the one million visitor mark was exceeded for the seventh time.

Catering

Due to its strategic realignment in the catering industry, Jungfrau Railways took over the management of the Kleine Scheidegg station restaurant in the Grindelwald-Wengen ski area at the end of October 2017. In the Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe business segment, dining on Eigergletscher and Jungfraujoch has been integrated by the end of 2019. This constitutes a central component in the value chain of tourist excursions.

Shops

In the Top of Europe shops, Jungfrau Railways offers a broad range of souvenirs, hand carved wooden figures, Victorinox knives, timepieces and clothes.

The Top of Europe Flagship Store, which offers a unique shopping experience in the heart of Interlaken, was opened on 10 October 2019. Over two floors and an area of over 1,000 square metres, you will find top brands such as Swatch, Lindt & Sprüngli and Victorinox. At the heart of the Flagship Store is the Top of Europe Shop with souvenirs and clothing.

The Jungfrau Railways Rail Info was also integrated into the store, which guarantees customers a comprehensive range of services under one roof.

Winter Sport and Mountain Experience

The segments of Winter Sports and Experience Mountains are important additions to the Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe. The winter sport facilities in the areas Kleine Scheidegg-Männlichen, Grindelwald-First and Mürren-Schilthorn are part of the Jungfrau Ski Region subscriber association, in which Jungfraubahn Holding AG holds a share of over 60%. Together with the partner companies, the Jungfrau Railway Group leads one of the most important ski resorts in Switzerland on behalf of the association.

The Experience Mountains segment includes destinations in the surrounding area of the Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe. Grindelwald-First – Top of Adventure, Harder Kulm – Top of Interlaken and Winteregg-Mürren – Top of Family enhance the regional experience and allow for interesting combinations such as holiday passes or cross marketing.

Strategy and objective

The value of the Jungfrau Railway Group as a value stock should continuously increase for investors. As the leading tourism company in Switzerland and the largest mountain railway group, the Jungfrau Railway Group has the aim of developing in the medium term in the direction of an integrated leisure and service company. Thus, the Jungfrau Railway Group, in particular in the areas of dining and shops, is continuing to develop the value creation chain, in order to increase quality and profitability. The objective is to strengthen the Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe as the main source of revenue. By means of continuous modernisation of the railways, the shortened travel times demanded by the market should be realised. The most recent success in this area was the opening of the V-Cableway-Project in december 2020. Internal growth is sought via better utilisation of the off-season. The Jungfraubahn Holding AG, within the alliance with Berner Oberland-Bahnen AG, thereby supports the "12-month high season" initiative. The principle is intended to initiate positive developments through visionary approaches and visitor-oriented project work.

The V-Cableway generation project

With the complete opening of the V-Cableway on 5 December 2020, Jungfrau Railways has entered a new era. In the tradition of the visionary pioneering achievements in the construction of the Jungfrau Railway from 1896 to 1912, two cable cars, a new public transport link, a multi-storey car park as well as a terminal as the valley station and a modern summit station with a connection to the historic Jungfrau Railway were built in eight years from the announcement on 19 December 2012.

The Eiger Express, the heaviest and most modern tricable gondola (3S) in the world, takes guests from the Grindelwald Terminal to the new Eigergletscher station in just 15 minutes. The impressive ride in 26-seater cabins passes by the world-famous North Face of the Eiger. At the new Eigergletscher mountain station, guests can access the ski slopes and hiking trails directly or transfer to the Jungfrau Railway toward the Jungfraujoch. Also departing from the Grindelwald Terminal, the new 10-person gondola Grindelwald-Männlichen (GGM) has been taking guests to the Männlichen in 19 minutes since December 2019.

The new V-Cableway generally reduces travel times by 47 minutes and significantly improve service quality. The V-Cableway will secure the successful long-term future of the entire Jungfrau Region as a premier year-round destination in Swiss tourism. The project lays the foundation for the region’s development into a premium destination. The V-Cableway strengthens the competitiveness of theJungfraujoch as a world-renowned flagship attraction and helps the winter sports destination reach the top position in international competition.
