The view from the Schynige Platte is breathtaking and from 21 June 2025 it will be even easier to frame in the right light. “From the new Schynige Platte Skywalk, guests can take in the impressive mountain backdrop of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, as well as the Niesen and Lake Thun in the distance,” says Jungfrau Railways Director Urs Kessler. The curved vantage platform blends in perfectly with the existing backdrop of the playground and mountain restaurant and hotel, enhancing the summit experience.
The new attraction integrates seamlessly into the existing access paths and hiking trails and is characterised by its boomerang shape. The Skywalk rises elegantly above the existing alpine meadow vegetation without any supports. The vegetation can continue to thrive thanks to the grid floor, which allows sunlight and rain to pass through.
Stabilisation work to be completed soon
The additional stabilisation work on the Grätli tunnel made it necessary to postpone the start of the Schynige Platte Railway season. The historic railway can now start its 132nd season on 21 June 2025. Due to the unstable rock area pressing on the tunnel, it has been monitored using measuring instruments since 2023. With deformations increasing in recent months, the Grätli tunnel was stabilised with steel girders in May and June 2025.
Most of the railway infrastructure of the Schynige Platte Railway dates back to its beginnings in 1893. The entire superstructure is being renewed, financed by the Canton of Bern, to ensure that the railway will be able to operate for decades to come. The first stage took place in April 2023.
Further stages are planned, which will be carried out in the autumn after the end of operations and in the spring before the start of operations. The track bed is being renovated, with rails, sleepers and some of the box racks replaced. The Wilderswil workshop is also being rebuilt. All work on the locomotives and carriages is being carried out by employees by hand directly on site.
