Schynige Platte Railway: Season starts on 21 June 2025

The Schynige Platte Railway starts its new season on 21 June 2025. The opening of the season had to be postponed by a week as stabilisation measures on the Grätli tunnel resulted in additional work.

The Grätli tunnel is located in the upper section of the historic Schynige Platte Railway (SPB), between kilometres 5.9 and 6.0. Due to the unstable rock area pressing on the tunnel, it has been monitored using measuring instruments since 2023. Damage that occurred in the course of 2024 required stabilisation measures, which were carried out in January/February 2025.

Start of season postponed by one week

During this work, it became clear that further measures would be necessary as the extent of the damage turned out to be greater than anticipated. For this reason, further stabilisation work has been carried out since the start of May 2025. The installation of a vaulted arch with steel girders meant the removal and reinstallation of tracks and overhead lines. This resulted in more work than initially planned, which means that the very tight schedule for the original opening date of 14 June 2025 can no longer be met.

This is why it has been decided to postpone the start of the Schynige Platte Railway season by one week. The start of the 132nd season of the SPB will now take place on Saturday, 21 June 2025, with a new summit attraction.

Construction work before and after the season

Since spring 2023, the Schynige Platte Railway has been carrying out work on the track. The renovation and maintenance work is carried out before the start and after the end of the season. A total of eleven stages are planned.
