Ice art deep in the Jungfrau Glacier

Want to know what it looks like inside a glacier? In the Ice Palace in the middle of the Jungfraufirn, 20 metres below the glacier plateau, you can experience the ice masses from the inside. But wrap up warm, because the temperature in the Ice Palace is a constant -3°C. In the 1930s, mountain guides began using ice picks and saws to cut an area of over 1,000 square metres out of the glacier ice. Over the years, a ramified system of halls, corridors and niches has developed – from the floor to the walls to the ceiling, all made of ice. Around 30 filigree ice sculptures carved out of the ice by artists are exhibited on a mirror-smooth tour. The figures are resharpened every six months and replaced once a year.

Did you know that…
around 30 hand-carved figures adorn the ice palace. Chainsaws are used for the rough parts, and long-handled special chisels from Japan for the finer details. Every six months, the carving is re-sharpened, and once a year, each ice sculpture is replaced.
