Sphinx Observatory: Cutting-edge research for the world

In a few seconds, an ultra-fast lift takes you to the vantage platform at the top of the Sphinx Rock. There you will be presented with a magnificent far-reaching view. World-class research also takes place at the same location, but somewhat hidden away. Meteorologists, astronomers, physicists and geologists find the best conditions for scientific work here and develop valuable contributions to the study of the environment. A research station was planned even before construction of the Jungfrau Railway began. Jungfrau Railways was also involved in the establishment of an international foundation for high alpine research in 1930 and today cooperates with the research station on sustainability issues.

Did you know that…
due to the low level of air pollution, the High Alpine Research Station on the Jungfraujoch is particularly suitable for studying the composition of the Earth’s atmosphere? Targeted measurements can be used, for example, to determine how much CO₂ is released into the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels.
